Introducing Thomas Jones

In late December of 2025, we featured a six key boxwood flute that Martin Doyle had made for a client in America. Ten days ago Martin received a lovely testimonial message from the owner of that flute, Thomas Jones, who very eloquently expressed how he felt about his investment.

Hi Martin,

Add me to your list of satisfied and happy customers!

When I decided to order a flute from you, I’d been playing my Blackwood Flute for over twenty years. I liked and enjoyed the flute, but the weight of the flute was starting to bother me, as I have mentioned, and I was feeling that I wasn’t getting enough from the flute.

I’m glad you suggested the Boxwood for the new flute. It weighs quite literally, half of what my Blackwood flute weighs. Your Boxwood flute feels vibrant when I pick it up, and almost alive in my hands. Playing it gives me such great pleasure. The tone is open and big, it’s louder and can be pushed harder without sacrificing any sound quality.

I spent over fifty years as a fine custom jeweler, 41 with my own business, and I feel the quality of your workmanship is superior. I like how you’ve done the keys and how close they are to the body; elegant and functional.

The Boxwood, itself is very distinctive and is growing more so, as you had said it would. And I love the fact that you had cut the wood branch yourself, so many years ago.

I hope this coming year is generous to you, I feel you’ve enabled me to have a true treasure that I’ll value and play the rest of my life!

Wishing you all the best!!!

Thomas Jones

Referring to the image above, Thomas wrote, “The instruments behind me are ones that I’ve made. The guitar is a Terz guitar, tuned a minor 3rd higher than a regular guitar. I finished it right after I got your flute. The other is a cross between a dulcimer and a da gamba, tuned an octave lower than a fiddle and it’s bowed.
This prompted our webmaster to ask Thomas for some background on his own work. Thomas very kindly replied with some wonderful information about himself and his endeavours over the years. It turns out that Thomas is well placed to assess Martin Doyle’s craftsmanship, as he himself is a master jeweller and a luthier.

Martin Doyle’s Website Receives Facelift

Martin Doyle’s website has recently received a much needed facelift in the form of a new template – MDF’s fourth incarnation in 20 years! The site has been lightened a little with the photo gallery and video clips pages being replaced with Martin’s Flickr and YouTube channels.

A heart-felt THANK YOU goes out to our good friend Shana Stone who assisted with the rebuild of the website by way of proofreading each page and making some very helpful observations and suggestions. It was an invaluable service for which Martin Doyle and his team are extremely grateful. More about Shana in our next news post.

Kind Words From Matthew Laurie

Matthew Laurie

Matthew Laurie

As mentioned in previous posts, Martin Doyle sometimes receives messages from people who have purchased flutes from him and write to compliment and thank him for his efforts. These kind comments are sometimes posted on Martin’s website, with the permission of the authors, and Martin recently received a very nice comment from Matthew Laurie – a community musician and storyteller from Derbyshire in England. These are Matthew’s kind words:

Hi Martin,
The flute [boxwood Celtic style flute] arrived today and I am in love! It is simply stunning and is far and away the finest flute that I have played and owned. I am amazed at the expressive range that I can achieve even on the first day of playing it. This flute will inspire me to play and practice more – I am very happy indeed. Thank you!

Some two weeks later Matthew commented to this webmaster that the flute had indeed inspired and helped him to practice more and to play at a higher level. I mentioned this to Martin Doyle who made the following comment:

Well for me the whole point of this flute making game is to make flutes that bring the players on – that’s my intention. Otherwise there would be no point in doing it.

Fair play to you Martin.

Kind Comments From Garry Shannon

Martin Doyle has just received a very kind testimonial from the renowned left-handed flute player Garry Shannon after Martin finished a keyed flute for him. These are Garry’s words:

“Martin is an affable craftsman in whose workshop time means nothing. He will generously spend hours discussing his craft. Despite his laid-back manner, he will not leave you waiting years for your new instrument. I have been recommending Martin Doyle flutes to my students for many years due to their tonality, volume and after-sales service. Last year, I finally took the plunge myself and put aside my beloved flute of twenty years for a new custom-made Doyle model and I have never looked back.”

Barry Conaty Playing A Martin Doyle Flute

Barry Conaty is a young flute player from County Cavan. In July he won first place in both the U 12 flute and the U 12 flute slow air competitions at the Ulster Fleadh 2012. Barry plays a Martin Doyle flute and recently sent Martin a very kind and eloquent note regarding his experiences and feelings about the flute.

Hi Martin,
Thank you so much for the time you spent with me and my family when we called to your house & workshop. I really enjoyed playing the flute with you.
While competing at the Ulster Fleadh, the adjudicator continuously emphasised the importance of having a flute with good tone whilst suiting your musical needs. When he announced the winner he commented on the excellent tone of my flute and then said that my flute had the best tone of the competition. I was awarded First Place in the U12 flute and U12 flute slow air competitions [2012]. The thing he looked for most was good tone and confident playing. I get my confidence and good tone from Martin Doyle flutes!!!!!!!

Fingering Charts Now Available

Martin Doyle playing a keyless D fluteIn the interests of serving those who play simple system flutes, Martin Doyle has added fingering charts for simple system keyless D flutes to his website. Printable PDF versions of the fingering charts are also available to download.

These fingering charts are inspired by the fingering charts published by Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) in his treatise On Playing the Flute which was first published in 1752. Martin Doyle studied Quantz at the beginning of his flute making career and found On Playing the Flute to be a great source of inspiration and information regarding simple system flutes and eighteenth century music in general.

Website Gets Facelift And Joe Makes Music

Martin Doyle’s Website Gets A Facelift

It has to happen every now and then… spring cleaning that is. And in New Zealand, where Martin Doyle’s webmaster lives, it is spring – so the timing is perfect. The southern spring has sprung and Martin Doyle has a new website – well, a new template at least. Same content pretty much, with some minor additions and the odd little tweak here and there – a facelift in effect.

The new-look website for Martin Doyle Flutes.

So a little celebration is in order and what better way to celebrate than with a tune …

Joe Doyle Makes Music

Joe Doyle

Recently added to the Martin Doyle’s flute music page is a lovely piece composed by Martin’s son Joe Doyle. Joe was out in the garden at his father’s home in County Clare a couple of weeks back, ‘playing around’ with his recently acquired Martin Doyle rosewood D flute, when a tune drifted through the music-rich ether of Clare and manifested itself through Joe and his flute. Joe dedicated the tune to his father by naming it ‘The Flute Maker Martin Doyle’ (‘by the flute maker’s son’, as Joe quipped) and recorded it later that day.
